Appointment of Music Director from 5 September 2023

Job Description, outline terms and application procedure

The Music Director is responsible for the overall musical standard of the choir and preparing the choir for concerts, usually three each year. Principal responsibilities are –

• planning, and in collaboration with the accompanist, taking weekly rehearsals for concert performances

• conducting those concert performances and the preceding ‘dress’ rehearsal

• providing an element of voice training and learning support as an integral part of rehearsals

• planning future concert programmes, normally with a three year horizon, in active participation with the trustees and the             Society’s repertoire group

• helping to formulate and work to an agreed budget on a concert-by-concert basis, within a yearly timeframe

• recruiting or assembling orchestras and vocal soloists

• arranging any instrument hire required

• leading occasional singing workshops

• taking part in other ad hoc musical activities of the choir

• attending the Society’s Annual General Meeting and, at the invitation of the trustees, Extraordinary General Meetings and         trustee meeting

• advising the committee of trustees on all musical matters

The successful applicant will be appointed on a self-employed basis and paid by way of rehearsal, concert and other ad hoc fees as agreed. Starting remuneration will exceed the current Central Range of fees as surveyed by ‘Making Music’ and fees will be reviewed annually. The initial contract will be of 3 years duration with a probationary period of 1 year.

Selected candidates will be called for interview in late February/early March and those short-listed will be auditioned on 11th April – it is anticipated that the appointment will then be made within one week. The appointment will commence on 5th September 2023 and will be in collaboration with the existing Music Director until he relinquishes his duties after our Verdi Requiem concert on 23rd September.
